Thank you for the beautiful collection of colors! I miss my garden and spending many relaxing hours watching the flowers grow. Now that we travel full time, I get my flower fix from other gardeners. Muesli looks very content! Such a beauty!

I've discovered Fairy Gardens I'm building this one with my granddaughters we are adding a lower level this week

Good morning Muesli are you going to help mum with her gardening? Hope some Catnip is on her shopping list. πŸ˜€

no! I've been gardening way before middle age! it's just a very relaxing thing to do and makes your garden so beautiful! and a place for Museli to roam in! enjoy digging! :0

A symptom that life is good πŸ™‚

Muesli looks so pretty surrounded by all that color ❀️

Muesli is such a sweet cat.

Beautiful!

Love it!

Not middle age, I've been doing it since a child.

A question for my British readers this time! πŸ™‚ What's the British English equivalent for "playing hardball"? I have an English character who needs to express that sentiment but "playing hardball" is an American expression - and I just can't think of a similar expression that British people would say instead?? I've been wracking my brains!
Here's the sentence: "I’ve negotiated with much tougher customers than you, so don’t think you can get me to raise my offer by playing hardball.”
Thank you!!

As Pearl suggested, pig-headed or obstinate could work... or bloody-minded/sheer bloody mindedness if that doesn't break the rudeness rules! Hard-nosed is slightly different - the others imply a general leaning towards being awkward, whereas hard-nosed implies an element of savvy (plus an unwillingness to bend). If you wanted something more passive, then a stick-in-the-mud also comes to mind, but more relevant in a social context than negotiation. Mind you, playing hardball does imply deliberately taking a position, so maybe hard-nosed makes most sense... although in reality, the more I think about the particular situation, UK English borrows quite heavily from US English in a business context, so personally I would probably say playing hardball!! Possibly "...raise my offer by not budging an inch" could also work (i.e. total unwillingness to compromise). Probably need to wind back a few more sentences to know what truly makes the most sense!

I'm not British, but is "playing havoc with" an English term, and would it be comparable in meaning? So you would say "....by playing havoc with me," or some variation thereof.

To my mind hard-nosed means insensitive and digging heels in means not wanting to negotiate. Playing hardball probably ok in UK English because no exact equivalent but if the idea is that the stronger person thinks the weaker person isn't really in a position to negotiate tough then you could just say don't piss about

Hmm...It's not an unheard of expression in the UK. I guess we might say something like, "being a hard arse" or being difficult". We also might say someone "wouldn't budge" but that's difficult in the first person. I'll keep thinking.

How about:....raise my offer by 'being pig-headed' or 'being hard-nosed or 'trying to be tough' or 'being obstinate'....

www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/country/british+english.html This might help. Box clever was pretty close I think but not exact. I didn't scroll through the whole list.

Possibly "throwing your weight around"?
